Running for Zaragoza American High School, I often won by as much as 15 seconds. My high school senior year, 1971, I went to Germany to compete in the all-Europe championships, winning in a record time, 1:55.3. My UO freshman year Adidas provided me shoes. This was my favorite spikes, the Spider. Adidas also gave me a pair of training spikes which was more protective against injury. Bowerman gave me this pair of spikes which I assumed he cobbled together himself, but later I learned that the uppers came from Japan and someone on his staff made a dozen or so pair. I wore them in competition only once. Geoff Hollister in the doorway, a UO runner and early Nike employee, traded my Adidas running flats for a pair of Nike Cortez. Hailu Ebba and I after our race at Hayward Field. Hailu helped me try to qualify for the NCAA meet my senior year. At the factory in Tainan, Taiwan called Sheunn Yng. Fellow Nike employee, Jim Gorman, had a son name Nate who was in the Nike poster. Sheunn Yng made that huge shoe. Mary and I went to Korea and attended Mark Feig's wedding. Mary helped at the kindergarten. The Army let them use a quanset hut as a temporary school for the local kids. On our second assignment to Korea, we took the whole family to the orphanage where we adopted Kelly. Dave Pearson and I took Nike employees to Eugene and Hayward Field. On this trip, Kenny Moore spoke. Another trip to Hayward Field. In front, left to right, Cory Bence, Lance Deal, Steve Bence, Johnny Truax, and Justin Gallegos.
